Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care

Course overview

This nationally recognised qualification reflects the role of educators working in early childhood education and care services across Australia. It is designed for domestic students who are seeking to take on leadership or supervisory responsibilities within regulated children’s education and care settings under the National Quality Framework (NQF).

At this level, educators are responsible for designing and implementing curriculum aligned with approved learning frameworks such as the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), while ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, standards, and service policies. Students will develop specialised knowledge and practical skills to support children’s learning, development, and wellbeing, as well as lead and mentor other educators.

Graduates may work in a range of settings including long day care centres, family day care, pre-schools, and kindergartens across Australia.

To achieve this qualification, students must complete a minimum of 280 hours of mandatory work placement in a regulated early childhood education and care service in Australia, as specified in the assessment requirements of the units of competency.
Entry Requirements
To enrol in this course, students must meet the following requirements:
Be at least 18 years of age and have completed Year 12 or an equivalent qualification in Australia
Hold a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30121 or equivalent), as this is a mandatory entry requirement for the Diploma
Participate in a pre-training review or course entry interview to assess suitability and individual learning needs
Demonstrate adequate English language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills to successfully complete the course

Resource Requirements

Students must have access to:
A computer or laptop with standard software (e.g. Microsoft Word, PDF reader, and web browser)
Reliable internet access
Basic digital literacy skills to participate in online or blended learning

Additional Requirements (Work Placement)

Prior to commencing work placement, students must provide:
A valid Working with Children Check (WWCC) for the relevant Australian state or territory
A National Police Check (if required by the placement provider)
Evidence of up-to-date vaccinations, as required by workplace or state regulations

Training and Assessment Information

Training and Assessment Information

This course is delivered through a blended learning model, combining face-to-face training, online learning, and structured workplace experience. Training may take place at ACVET’s training facilities, through virtual classrooms, and via self-paced study.

Students will participate in a combination of theoretical and practical learning designed to reflect real workplace conditions in the Australian early childhood education and care sector. You are expected to attend scheduled sessions, engage in online learning activities, and complete independent study outside of class hours.

As part of this qualification, students must complete a minimum of
280 hours of mandatory work placement in a regulated early childhood education and care service in Australia. ACVET may assist in organising a suitable placement; however, students may also source their own. Workplace visits or virtual observations may be conducted by trainers and assessors to support assessment requirements.

In addition to scheduled training and placement, students are expected to undertake independent study, including research, completing assessments, and general reading.

At the commencement of each unit, trainers and assessors will outline all assessment requirements. Students will have access to learning materials, digital resources, and learner support services to assist in successfully completing the course.

What is the application process?
Step 1: Fill out ACVET online application form You can complete the application form online by going on the link above. Please note that you will need the following to submit your application:

- Scanned copy of your passport
- Certified Academic Transcript and qualification from Year 12 or Above (translated into English)
- Resume (if available)

Step 2: Receive and Accept your Offer Letter. Return the signed Offer Letter and Student Agreement to ACVET.

Step 3: Participate in a course interview with one of ACVET’s representatives.

Step 4: Make your initial fees deposit.

Step 5: Complete ACVET English Placement Test (only applicable if valid English proficiency evidence not provided).

Step 6: Receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) Once you have completed all the steps, our team will review your application and then you will receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
How much time does it take to process my application?
Once your application has been approved by ACVET’s admissions team, you will receive an Offer Letter detailing your course, tuition fees and all relevant terms and conditions. Before you accept, check all the conditions on your offer letter.

Once you accept your Offer Letter and make initial deposit payment as outlined in your Offer Letter, you will be issued your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Please remember that you will need this Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) document to apply for your student visa.
